STUDENT SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
MVYSO's Student Service team is a student led service organization whose purpose is to:
Serve fellow MVYSO Students by helping them connect socially and grow musically
Assist MVYSO staff
Lead fellow MVYSO students in giving back to our community
MUSIC BUDDIES PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
Music Buddies will assist with MVYSO’s Jam Club program for Special Needs Students. Music Buddies will participate in all of the music activities while encouraging, prompting and assisting special needs students’ participation in music activities. Music Buddies will also assist the Music Therapist by helping pass out instruments, direct “traffic”, etc. Some Music Buddies will be assigned to a specific student and work with that student weekly.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Age 14 and up
- Must enjoy music
- Willing and flexible attitude
- Ability to be a little goofy is a plus, but not required – will train
TIME REQUIREMENT:
Tuesdays 4:15 – 5:15
DUTIES:
- Arrive at 4:15 weekly and assist with set up and welcoming students
- As students arrive, help students engage in exploratory music activities such as playing timpani drums. Exploratory activity changes weekly.
- Participate in all Jam Club music activities for the day including but not limited to: singing, dancing and playing rhythm instruments.
- Assist students when they need to leave the room due to overstimulation or when they need to use the restroom (they are independent for toileting, but have trouble with the doors and sometimes need help with the sink for hand washing)
- Encourage students to participate in music activities
- Maintain a positive attitude and give positive feedback to students regarding their participation (i.e.- “Great Job!” “That was some awesome dancing!” “Ooh! That was so close! Let’s try again!”)
- Report behavior problems or other issues to Music Therapist (Janea) or Recreation Therapist (Elisa)
GENERAL SERVICE PROGRAM
The MVYSO Student Service Team is a student led service organization whose purpose is to be of service to fellow MVYSO students and MVYSO Staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1 or more years of participation in MVYSO
- Ages 14 & Up
- Exemplary practice and rehearsal habits
- Passion for service
- Ability to help others feel welcomed and comfortable in a large group setting
- Obvious enthusiasm for participation in MVYSO and the future of the organization
DUTIES:
- Participate in Student Service Team Meetings.
- Watch email for SST information
- At rehearsal, look for students who are looking lost or lonely and reach out to them
- Be aware of MVYSO calendar and promote it amongst your peers
- Assist MVYSO staff in set up and clean-up and other tasks as requested & available (perhaps filing music at the office).
- Maintain a positive attitude about MVYSO, the music and activities and be vocal about it amongst your peers.
- Take disgruntled students aside and try to help them with their issues (i.e. If they are struggling with music, connect them with the conductor or coach. If they are saying negative things about the music say something like, “It sounds weird now, but I can see where it’s going and it’s going to be really cool.” Or, “I’m excited about it!” Or, if worse comes to worse, “Yeah. The audience is going to like it. I’m looking forward to the music for the concert after this one!”)
- Participate in and promote fundraisers. Encourage others to participate
- Encourage others to participate in social activities, camp, tour groups, etc.
- Lead by example in your rehearsal behavior, practice habits and positive attitude.
- Bring issues to the attention of MVYSO staff

Disclaimer: There will be a maximum of 15 Regular Season Service Team Members. Applications are reviewed and the team is selected by current Student Service Team Members and MVYSO Staff. Even if you're not selected for the regular season team, you may still help with MVYSO events, set up, clean up, fundraising, etc. In fact it's encouraged!
