ELISA LEWIS - Executive Director & Flute Coach​​ (Jr. Symphony)

Elisa was one of the founders of the MVYSO.  Her passion for music education is evident in all of her work with the MVYSO.  She holds a degree in Therapeutic Recreation from CSU Fresno.  This has helped her to make MVYSO fun ... and a little different!

NAOMI FANSHIER - Symphony Orchestra Conductor,  Program Director & Single Reeds Coach

Naomi holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from PLU and a Master's degree in Orchestral Conducting from Messiah College. As a lecturing Music Professor at Northwest University, she conducts both the Wind Ensemble and Orchestra. Naomi holds a permanent position with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra, and plays each year with the BachFest Orchestra and Tacoma City Ballet Orchestra. As a clarinet coach, Naomi is involved with the Tahoma High School Band program, and has served as a music consultant for Auburn School District. Naomi has been involved with MVYSO since 2010 and teaches private clarinet and saxophone students. She loves to teach music as a tool to build life skills and have fun while doing so! *MVYSO Studio Teacher

DANIEL BASKIN - Jr. Symphony Orchestra Conductor, Bass Coach & additional Cello Coaching

Daniel has been teaching bass and cello since 2007.  He holds a Bachelor's in Music Education from Pacific Lutheran University.  He loves helping students make musical decisions and distinctions so that they own their own learning.  He provides a strong positive learning experience for our students to excel musically while having fun doing so.

CHERLYN JOHNSON - Debut Conductor, Elite Strings Director , Violin Coach & String Specialist
The MVYSO is thrilled to have Cherlyn on the MVYSO staff. She played a big part in the start up of the MVYSO by sending us her top two violin students as part of our original 8 students.  She holds a Master of Music in Violin Performance from the St. Louis Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music from North Park University in Chicago. She enjoys a very active career as a performing artist, composer, arranger and private teacher. She loves to help students engage, excel, create and soar. Cherlyn will work with our Debut Orchestra, violin players and string coaches. *MVYSO Studio Teacher

JANICE HALSTEAD - Philharmonia Conductor

Janice Halstead is a newly retired orchestra teacher from the Kent School District. She earned her BA in music from Seattle Pacific University. Janice is a professional cellist who has played in numerous ensembles and orchestras over her long career of teaching and performing. Her passion is helping players reach their highest potential while encouraging a love of music.

EMILY INGELS - Outreach Director & Violin Coach

Emily holds a degree in violin performance from Central Washington University.  She teaches privately in Maple Valley and Auburn and coaches for several Puget Sound schools as well as the MVYSO.  Her love for teaching strings is evident in all of her interactions with her students.

CONNIE BIGGS - Viola Coach

Connie has been teaching violin and viola in the Maple Valley area for since she moved to the area in 2012.  Before moving to the area, she tutored reading, spelling, grammar and writing.  Her music experience includes performing with her church, playing in Chapman College Symphony, working with music ministry in her church and teaching viloin and viola privately.  She studied Music Education at Chapman College (now Chapman University.)

ROSE ROGERS - Bassoon Coach

Rose is working on her Bachelor's Degree in Bassoon Performance at University of Puget Sound.  She has been a part of youth symphony orchestras since she started playing bassoon.  Her coaching experience includes Lake Samish Music Camp and Substitute Double Reeds Coach at Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia. She also teaches bassoon privately.  Her past positive experiences in music coupled with her patience, makes her an ideal instructor for our students.

JARROD SNYDER - Trumpet Coach

Jarrod was one of MVYSO's first 10 members.  He has been playing for 11 years and has taught privately for the past 3 years.  He has completed the Music Theory Program at Bellevue College.  Jazz improv is one of his specialties.  He enjoys inspiring creativity in our students.

MATT CLEGG - Low Brass Coach

Matt is an engineer by day and trombonist by night. He holds two degrees from Central Washington University: Bachelor of Music in Wind Performance and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering.  During his studies in college, he sat principle trombone for both the CWU Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and played lead trombone for CWU Jazz Band 1. Matt has attended numerous summer music programs across the country including the Marrowstone Music Festival, Evergreen Music Festival, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Sewanee Summer Music Festival.  He has also coached in youth music camps including Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and in a variety of other settings. Matt is honored to have studied with Dr. John Neurohr, Dr. Mark Babbitt, Scott Hartman, Steve Fissel, Ko-ichiro Yamamoto, Massimo La Rosa, and Don Lucas. He is looking forward to teaching our MVYSO low brass players to explore their own passion in music, while inspiring them to maintain a balanced life of work and fun.  *MVYSO Studio Teacher.


Trevor holds a Bachelor of Music in Brass Performance from the University of Washington and a Master of Music in Horn Performance from the University of Oklahoma.  Trever has a passion for teaching and a drive to help students improve and meet goals.  He has performed with the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra, University of Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra, University of Oklahoma Opera Orchestra, Marrowstone Music Festival, and Easter Music Festival.  In addition to coaching at MVYSO, he is a private French horn teacher.
LOGAN ESTERLING - Oboe and French Horn Coach

Logan recently graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Washington. He currently holds the position of English Horn with Symphony Tacoma and the Yakim Symphony. He performs regularly with many other local orchestras. Logan was the winner of two concerto competitions: UW Symphony Concerto Competition and the Sewanee Festival Concerto Competition. He has performed also performed as a soloist with the Eastside Symphony Orchestra, Whidbey Island Consort, Carillon Chamber Orchestra and UW Symphony, performing works by Marcello, Mozart and Sibellius. As an active freelancer, Logan has had the opportunity to perform with many accomplished artists such as Josh Groban, Evanescence, Lindsey Stirling, and "Weird Al" Yankovic. He has also recorded music for the video game Destiny 2 as well as for a DreamWorks short. Following the completion of his undergrad, he plans to continue working in the area for a few years before pursuing a Master's degree.
PAMELA BUTLER RYKER - Flute Coach (Symphony)

Pam holds a Master's in Music Performance from the University of Washington.  She has a worldwide professional experience in orchestra, chamber music and solo performance.  Her calm, positive character and encouraging approach to teaching helps students excel at flute playing.  Her teaching experience includes coaching with Tacoma Youth Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Marrowstone Summer Camp.  Her teaching at the collegiate level includes flute instructor on faculties at University of Washington, Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Wisconsin - River Falls, and Olympic College.  She has maintained a busy and successful private flute studio for many years.
INGRID SMITH - Clarinet and Single Reeds Coach

Ingrid has her degree in Music Education from Pacific Lutheran University. She is currently a band teacher and solo and ensemble contest adjudicator. She has a passion for helping young people further their love for music through perfomance. Ingrid says, "I met my best friends through music and learned a ton of problem solving and team work skills through music. I want to help others find this like I have."

DAVID COUCH - Bass Coach
David is the Orchestra Director at Kentridge High School. He studied double bass at the University of Texas in Austin, and played in the Austin Symphony before moving to Washington in 1980. He has played with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, 5th Avenue Theatre and the Pacific Northwest Ballet. He currently plays with the Auburn Symphony and teaches orchestra to students grades 5-12 in Kent.


Katelyn is a former MVYSO student who has gone on to get her degree in cello performance from Central Washington University. She loves cello and helping students succeed.

Elizabeth is a board certified Music Therapist who received her Music Therapy degree from the University of Kansas. She has a passion for working with students with special needs, and  has studied Autism extensively.  Elizabeth's primary instrument is piano. She also has a focus on voice and enjoys performing in musical theater.
